The steiner-waldorf approach
at nant-y-cwm
Steiner-Waldorf education nurtures a child’s intellectual, creative, and emotional development through holistic learning.
By integrating academics, arts, and practical skills, Nant-Y-Cwm cultivates imagination, critical thinking, and social responsibility.
At Nant-y-Cwm, we aim to develop well-rounded individuals who positively impact their communities and the world.

Learning setting
Classes 1-8 are located in the Victorian school building that has been beautifully renovated and extended by parents, teachers and friends.
Inside the school, the classrooms are designed to be homely, comfortable spaces that the children can relax and feel safe in. We use soft colours, rounded edges and natural materials. The simple, uncluttered decor encourages creativity and imagination.

connection with nature
Outdoor learning is integral to Steiner Waldorf education as it aligns with the philosophy’s holistic approach, fostering a connection between students and nature.
Student’s at Nant-Y-Cwm enjoy the beautiful grounds, gardens & outdoor classroom, which provide a rich environment for experiential learning, stimulates sensory development, enhances creativity, and promotes physical well-being.
This approach nurtures a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living things, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility and instilling values that extend beyond the classroom.

an alternative to exams
Instead of traditional exams and the pressure that accompanies them, we focus on narrative assessments, teacher observations, and qualitative feedback, which provide a comprehensive understanding of each student’s academic and personal development. This approach encourages a more nuanced and multifaceted evaluation, taking into account a child’s emotional and social growth alongside their academic achievements.
We aim to promote a deeper understanding of each child’s unique strengths and challenges, fostering a supportive and nurturing learning environment.

Mixed age learning
We combine classes at Nant-y-Cwm and find that mixed-age classrooms bring significant benefits. We find that children have increased social and emotional understanding, engage in both collaborative and independent learning with greater ease, and have more positive peer interactions than their counterparts in single-year classrooms.
We aim for a continuity of care – the children get to know their teachers, and the bond develops over their years at Nant-Y-Cwm. This allows the staff to understand the nuances of each child, so that teaching styles can be adapted.

Becoming well-rounded teenagers
Our role is to help our pupils transition into their teenage years, so that they are confident, secure and resilient.
We foster respect and kindness within our classrooms, and operate a ‘no phone’ policy on the school grounds which allows the children to relax into learning, away from the pressures of social media.
Steiner education encourages a sense of social responsibility, instilling ethical values and an appreciation for community. This comprehensive approach equips students with the skills and values needed for a well-rounded adolescence and adulthood.
